EuroFab project Kick-Off

The team's latest project, EuroFab (European Urban Fabric Classification Using Artificial Intelligence) started today with a kick-off meeting. with a kick-off meeting. Krasen Samardzhiev joins the team

The team is growing! For the upcoming EuroFab research project, we've been joined by Dr Krasen Samardzhiev, who will take on the role of a and will work closely with the rest of the team on the development of morphometric characterisation of space using heterogeneous of space using heterogeneous data sources. Krasen holds a Ph.D. in Geographic Data Science from the University of Liverpool and has worked with Martin Fleischmann during his time at Liverpool. ESA EXPRO grant on urban fabric of Europe

We are pleased to announce that a research consortium led by Dr Martin Fleischmann has been awarded a grant to study the structure of cities in Europe in space and time. The project, funded by the European Space Agency, will be carried out in collaboration with academic partners from the Alan Turing Institute and the OECD Geospatial Lab, and with partners from policy and practice. policy and practice.

Lisa Winkler joins the team (remotely)

We are delighted that Lisa Winkler from the University of Freiburg has joined the team as an external collaborator. Lisa's background is in physics, but her interest has shifted towards cities and their structure, which makes her a great fit for the team. Lisa will remain in Freiburg, but will be working with us on on various research projects and publications.

Michael Breheny Prize

The head of the team, Dr Martin Fleischmann, was recently awarded the Michael Breheny Prize for the most innovative paper in Environment and Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science in 2022 for the paper Methodological foundation of a numerical taxonomy of urban form written together with Alessandra Feliciotti, Ombretta Romice and Sergio Porta.

I am sitting on a train back to Prague after two days of discussing tooling for spatial data science available in the Python, R and Julia ecosystems, with occasional excursions to the worlds of Rust, JavaScript or ESRI. I am coming back from the Spatial Data Science across Languages (SDSL) workshop and I'd like to share a few thoughts while they're fresh.
